5 Tell-Tale Signs Your Baby Is Teething

While you may love your infant’s gummy smile, it won’t be long before their chompers begin to break through their gumline. Since each child develops a little differently, this can happen as early as three or four months or around their first birthday. Therefore, it’s important to keep an eye out for the common signs of teething. To learn what they are, as well as how to take care of your baby’s pearly whites, read on!

5 Common Signs of Teething

As previously mentioned, your child’s first teeth can make an appearance anywhere from 4-12 months old. During that time, keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

  • Drooling – Since teething stimulates saliva production, you might notice that the front of your baby’s shirt is constantly soggy.
  • Biting – Biting on things provides counter-pressure on your little one’s gums. So, you’ll probably notice that they are always chewing on something to find relief!
  • Irritability – The inflammation and tenderness from teething can be quite uncomfortable, resulting in an uptick of crying, whining, and overall irritability.
  • Refusing to eat – The suction needed to nurse might make your infant’s gums feel worse. So, don’t be surprised if they have some trouble eating while teething.
  • Ear pulling – Tugging relentlessly at their ears is another common sign your baby is teething. Note: it could also be due to an ear infection, so make sure to rule that out first.

The Dos and Don’ts of Alleviating Teething-Related Discomfort

The good news is that you can help ease your baby’s sore gums. Here are a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind:

  • DON’T use rubbing alcohol
  • DON’T buy over-the-counter teething gels
  • DON’T offer them amber teething necklaces
  • DO try refrigerated toys
  • DO offer cold foods, like applesauce
  • DO talk to their doctor to see if baby acetaminophen is an option

Another important best practice is to maintain your child’s routine. Although it might be difficult, babies find comfort in it. So, do what you can to keep their meals, bedtime, and the like consistent.

How to Keep Your Baby’s Tooth (or Teeth!) Healthy

While oral hygiene should begin before your baby’s first tooth emerges, there are a few additional things you should incorporate once it has broken through the gumline. The first is to schedule an appointment with a pediatric dentist. That way, they can get to know you both, conduct a quick checkup, share some advice, and answer any questions you have. At home, you should use an appropriately sized toothbrush to gently clean their teeth and a damp, clean washcloth to wipe down their gums. Once two teeth emerge next to each other, use some floss to carefully remove debris as well.

Teething can be quite an uncomfortable time for your baby. The good news is that once you’re aware of the common signs, you can do what you can to help soothe their tender, irritated gums.
