As a parent, you should want what’s best for your little one, so any time you see them in distress, you’ll want to act quickly to make things right! One instance that might cause them grief is teething; even though this is a natural process that all kids go through, it’s often pretty unpleasant and uncomfortable for them. Fortunately, teething rings can provide relief—and in a safe manner! Continue reading below to learn more from your pediatric dentist about the teething process and how the right type of teething ring can provide relief for your child.

What Are Teething Rings?

Teething rings are toys designed specifically to assist children who are undergoing the teething process. Teething generally occurs between 4 to 7 months of age for most children and continues for about 2 years—and during this time, children must endure the eruption of their primary teeth. Some common symptoms associated with teething include swollen or tender gums, drooling, fussiness, and the urge to bite hard objects.

Luckily, teething rings can assist with symptom relief! These toys are generally shaped as rings that are easy for smaller hands to hold and bite, and they come in safe materials such as rubber, soft plastic, and silicone. They provide soothing counterpressure to a child’s sore gums, in addition to distracting them from their discomfort.

How Should Teething Rings Be Used?

As ingenious as teething rings are, there is a method to follow when using them, and you’ll want to ensure that your child is using theirs correctly. Consider these tips for safe teething ring usage:

  • Be sure you’re giving your child a ring made from safe materials, and never secure a teething ring around their neck, as this is a choking hazard. Try to avoid toys that have small parts attached or liquid inside.
  • You can chill your child’s teething ring by putting it in the fridge for a few minutes; just be sure it’s not frozen solid. The cool temperature will provide additional relief for inflamed gums.
  • Never let your child use their teething ring without supervision.
  • Clean and replace your child’s teething ring as needed, and never allow them to use an old teething ring or one used by another child. Use soapy water and dry it thoroughly, and replace it after 2 or 3 months.
  • You might also consider substitutes for teething rings, mainly soft, chilled foods like applesauce or yogurt.

The bottom line is that when used correctly, teething rings provide an immense amount of safe relief for children who are teething. You also shouldn’t hesitate to ask your child’s dentist for other ideas for assisting them with teething; this phase might be natural, but it doesn’t have to be unpleasant!
